SMTP 553 Error
I recently started getting 553 errors on my BT email account and
thought it was time to explain what they are:
When you send email you use a protocol called SMTP (simple Mail
transfer protocol). In the early days of the internet you could
connect you email client to any SMTP server on the internet and send
the email.
That soon stopped with the rise in spam messages and mail
providers started requiring SMTP authentication before you could use
their SMTP servers to send email.
This effectively meant that you needed an email account with
that provider.
Although that move is effective against spam it doesn't protect
against Phishing so now email providers are now examining the sender
email address and checking that it is the same as the receiving
email address.
This is ok if you have only 1 email account configured but if
you are using multiple email accounts then you will have multiple
receive addresses.
To prevent errors you will need to be able to associate the
alternate email addresses to the main email address. If it isn't
possible to do this then you will need to use either multiple
identities -one for each email account or multiple windows logon
accounts or multiple email clients.
