New Email Account Setup Information

When you come to configure a desktop email client like Outlook Express to access your new email mailbox you will need the following information which you can get by logging in to your email account management control panel.

Typical details that are needed for setup are:

  • SMTP server- This sever is used to send email.
  • POP3 or Imap4 server-This server is used to receive email.
  • Account name - This is your login name to receive email.
  • Account password -This is your login password to receive email.
  • Email Address- This is the sender address

This is how 1and1 shows the email settings for a given email address. (note address greyed out to prevent spam)

Setup Notes:

1. You will notice that to send email using SMTP you require authentication this uses the same name/password combination as for receiving.

2. You need to enter either the IMAP server address or POP3 address depending on your choice of access protocol. See IMAP and POP3 Compared.

3. very often the account name will use the email address and so it has the form of acountname@domainname and not just accountname.
