Enable and Configure Google Gmail For POP3 Access

Before you can access your Google Gmail mailbox from standard pop3 client like Outlook Express or Incredimail you need to enable you Gmail mailbox for pop3 support.

There are in fact two ways of viewing your Gmail email using Outlook Express ( or any standard pop3 client):

  • Email forwarding
  • pop3 access

First you need to:

  1. Log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Click 'Settings' at the top of any Gmail page.
  3. Click 'Forwarding and POP' in the  'Mail Settings' box.
  4. You will see the two options (screenshot below).

Using Forwarding Option

Email forwarding sends a copy of the email to another mailbox and is a common technique used in providing a single point of access to manage multiple email accounts.

The advantage that this method of access has over the pop3 access method is that you don not require to configure an email account on the client as the account already exists.

If you use this option you can still access your email using the browser by leaving a copy of the email on the Google server (default option and recommended).

Enabling this option still allows you to also access the mailbox via pop3.

Enabling POP3

The second option you will see relates to POP3. By enabling this option you will be able to connect to your Google Gmail mailbox using any standard POP3 client and send and receive email.

Again the default option is to leave a copy of the email on the Google server and it is recommended that you should leave it that way.

However enabling pop3 access is only the first part of the process you now need to configure the clients for access (see below).

Note: Don't forget to save the changes or they wont take effect!!
