Hosted Exchange Mailboxes
Many medium to large companies use Microsoft Exchange email and Outlook as
their email and collaboration solution.
For smaller companies Microsoft bundled Exchange with the small business
server platform.
The problem with Exchange for small business has been with the administration
as it is not simple to set up except with the correct training and even that is
expensive.
With the increased speed in Internet connectivity its is now possible to have
an exchange solution without the expense if buying the hardware and software
and without the need for an exchange administrator by having an hosted exchange
solution.
The email provider has all of the setup and configuration issues and all you
need to do is to add the mailboxes.
In addition most providers also provide free Outlook software so that you can
take full advantage of the exchange scheduling and calendaring features.
Why Use Exchange Email Mailboxes
An exchange mailbox is hosted on a Microsoft exchange server and although you
can access it using standard web protocols like pop3 and Imap4 you only get the
full functionality when using a MAPI client (Microsoft Outlook).
Exchange in collaboration with outlook offers more than just email, its
offers calendaring and scheduling which is ideal when you are working in a small
team. It also offers Active sync which will work in conjunction with your
Smartphone /Blackberry to keep you in touch with your email when you are away
from the office.
If these features are important to you then exchange is the obvious choice.
If you just want to send and receive email then you don't need an exchange
Mailbox.
There are many companies offering hosted exchange mailboxes. If you are USA based you may want to take a look at
1and1.com
and If you are UK based then
