Incredimail Install and Upgrade
To install Incredimail Xe you can either do a single part
manual
install or a two part automatic install. In either case you need to go to the Incredimail website
to download/installIncrediMail.
On the Incredimail home page you should find a text link
to the IncrediMail download page at the bottom of the page. Depending on how you
access the IncrediMail download page you may find that you get a choice to copy
the install files or that you automatically trigger an auto install. Generally
button download links trigger the auto installer and text download links take
you to the IncrediMail download install/upgrade page.
If you place your mouse over the IncrediMail download button you will be able to
view the link in Internet explorer. If this link name contains the word
installer then the link will start the auto install.
Incredimail Install - Auto Install
If you click on any of the IncrediMail download button links on the
IncrediMail website you will go to the IncrediMail download page
and the auto installer will start. If you don't want to install now but would
prefer to manually install then on the welcome screen click cancel
and follow the manual install link.
If you want
to install then choose the language and then choose next. The second part of the
auto install begins to copy the install files. At the end of the install there is an install complete window click
finish and Incredimail will the go through configuration process.
Cancel the IncrediMail Install
If you cancel the install then an
icon will be place on the desktop allowing you to proceed from that point at a
later time. Not only is an icon placed on the desktop but the install program
will run next time and in fact each time you restart windows until you install
IncrediMail.
If decide not to install IncrediMail then delete the continue later shortcut.
You may find that this short cut reappears the next time you reboot but the
install window doesn't open and to continue the install you need to click the
shortcut.
This should be enough to stop the continue setup screen appearing each
time you reboot but if not or if you want to completely remove it then proceed
as follows:
If the above procedure doesn't work or you want to be more
thorough then if you right click the shortcut icon and select properties
then it will show you the install program click find target to go to the
program directory( should be under windows\temp). You can then either delete the
program or the directory.
Finally for the more technical (Don't do this
unless you are comfortable with the registry editor) you can remove the registry
settings which cause the setup program to run on Windows 98 they are here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ImInstaller"="D:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\ImInstaller\\IncrediMail\\IMLOADER.
To perform the manual install go to the
IncrediMail Website and
at the bottom of the page there is a text link to the IncrediMail download page.
Follow the text link to download the complete installer files ( approx 6 Mbytes) to your local machine
(see screenshot below).
Once downloaded double click the .exe file and follow the instructions. At the end
of the install there is an install complete window click finish and Incredimail
will the go through the configuration process.
Incredimail Configuration
If you have an existing Outlook express account(s) configured
then you will be given an option to import these accounts into Incredimail or to
manually configure them. If you intend that Incredimail will eventually replace
Outlook Express then you should import the accounts and also the messages.
The install copies the information from Outlook Express and
leaves the original intact. However as is this case with all installs I would
recommend that you
backup Outlook Express beforehand -just in case.
Because you
have copied the settings and email from Outlook Express you can always go back
to or indeed use Outlook Express at any time.
To avoid confusion it is a good idea to only use one email
client and not move back and forth between them as you may find email being
split between two mailboxes.
Incredimail Upgrade
Should You Upgrade?
In general I would advise against unnecessary upgrades. There are
three main reasons for upgrading IncrediMail or indeed any software
product.
- The upgrade is designed to fix problems (bugs) that are
affecting you at present.
- The upgrade contains new features which you need.
- The manufacturer is discontinuing support for the older
versions.
Upgrading
On the
IncrediMail download page you will see two download options-full and upgrade. If you
already have Incredimail installed then choose the upgrade option.
To check whether the current build has new
features that yours doesn't have or contains fixes for known problems click the
what's new link on the download page.

If you are
not sure whether or not you need to upgrade then you need to compare build
numbers. The latest or current build level is shown along with the date on the
download page.
If the build level of your current installed version is less than
that shown then you can upgrade. To check your present build level open
Incredimail and select help>About Incredimail Xe. The Build number is
the last 4 digits currently 1488 (June 2004) but 1361 in the screenshot
below.

To upgrade click the click to upgrade link as shown above and follow
the instructions. The upgrade procedure is very much like a normal
install.
Upgrade Problems
If you experience problems when upgrading i.e. error messages or
something doesn't work after upgrading then proceed as follows:
1) Do A full download and install instead of an upgrade. This is
especially important if you are skipping several build levels.
Example:
I experienced an error message the dynamic link library
mproject.dll could not be found etc when trying to upgrade from
build 1361 to build 1488. The upgrade completed and Incredimail
worked ok except for the notifier which didn't work. I did a full
install and completed ok with no error messages and the notifier
worked ok.
If it still doesn't work then
2) Update your operating system by going to the
windows update site.
If you are not sure what windows updates are then see the
windows updates article first.
