The Internet and Internet Use
Using email invariably involves using the Internet. Many email problems that people enquire about turn out to be Internet related problems.
Therefore I decided to include this section on the Internet in general which will cover general internet use and setup and new message relate Internet technologies.
Before you can use the Internet you need to have an Internet connection and for that you use an
ISP - (Internet Service Provider). For most people going online today they will be
Connecting to the Internet Using DSL/ADSL and many existing Users will be moving away from dial up connections to a broadband type Internet connection.
The movement towards broadband access is also matched by the movement towards broadband wireless internet access (Wi-Fi ). Using Wi-Fi wireless access means that you can connect using a normal
laptop and download you emails as email rather than as text messages (3G mobiles).
Wi-Fi Internet access points are popping up all over Europe, USA, Canada and Australia.
The Internet for Applications
Although email has undoubtedly been the killer app over the last 10 years there applications like VOIP (voice over IP) and IM (instant messaging) that are likely to become just as popular over the
next 10 years.
There is also a growing trend for web hosted applications as opposed to having applications on your PC. This was first started by web based email applications like
hotmail and as continued with Instant messaging and will undoubtedly permeate all application areas.
Internet Use and How it is Changing
Not only are the Internet applications changing but Internet use is also changing. Currently most people use the Internet to either surf the Web or for email. However with the growth of weblogs or
Blogs the Internet is becoming much more Interactive.
In addition, and made possible by faster access, there as been a tremendous growth in companies offering online file sharing and Data Storage solutions.
There will be a growing trend, especially amongst smaller companies to move their data and applications completely to the Internet.
