Outlook Express Spam Control
Spam control is achievable in Outlook Express by using the Outlook Express
built in, block and filter features, and also through many third party products.

When Spammers sends spam they like to know whether it has reached a valid
email address. They can use a variety of tools to verify emails but they are not
100% accurate. Therefore they have resulted to a few tricks to overcome this.
They all rely on embedding HTML code or graphics in the email to give an
automatic read receipt without
you knowing. There are three features available for preventing this they are
Spam Filtering and blocking in Outlook Express
Outlook Express can be configured to block or filter spam using a variety of
mechanism like white list/ backlist filtering, Word lists and blocked senders.

Outlook Express can be configured using message rules to filter out/block junk

Attachments and Spam
Attachments are used to send viruses and these are often sent by spam email.
Unsafe attachments are blocked in Outlook express in SP1 by default.

Commercial Anti-Spam software
Although Outlook Express has built in spam control features they are not as comprehensive and easy to set up and
maintain as commercial anti-spam software solutions like Spam Inspector, Spam
bully, Spam assassin etc.
Because of the danger posed by phishing scams I would advise you to choose anti
spam software that has this capability built in.
