You see them displayed in Internet explorer when accessing a website and also in popular programs like cuteftp. These tools allows you to recover passwords that are hidden behind the "******" inside a password window.

There is a  free password unmasker from alpinesnow.com that allows you to recover passwords that are hidden behind the "******" inside a password window.

For passwords in a web browser use AsterWin IE and for hidden passwords in other applications use Asterisk Logger.

Recovering Website Passwords.

Internet explorer and Outlook Express store password and account information in the protected store.

The protected store contains:

• Auto complete passwords
• Passwords for password protected sites
• MSN explorer passwords
• Outlook express Identity Passwords
• POP3 access passwords
• Hotmail accounts configured in Outlook Express

There are several utilities available for viewing the protected store and revealing their contents. The one I use which is free and has no restrictions is Protected Storage PassView from nirsoft.

Recovering  Dial up Passwords.

 I once spent hours on the Internet trying to find a free tool to recover a dial up password so I could transfer it to my laptop.

There are several utilities available but the only free one I know that has no restrictions is Dialupass v2.43 - Dialup/RAS/VPN Password Recovery again from from nirsoft.
