How to Send Email to a Mobile Phone
If you're like me and have difficulty sending SMS text messages then it is
possible to use something you are more familiar with ... email.
It is possible to exchange messages with a mobile phone via email.
So if the
person you are trying to contact is only available by mobile phone you can
simply send them an email to their mobile instead of their normal email address.
SMS messages are generally limited to 160 characters (Latin alphabet) and so
your message exchange needs to be kept short.
If you want to send longer
messages, with say attachments, you can send a short message (message alert)
informing them to read their mailbox for the main message.
The actual message exchange process works slightly differently depending on the
mobile phone number's country of origin, and not on the mobile phones current
location.
North American Registered Mobile Phones
Mobile phones in North America generally already have an email address which takes the
form of :
mobile phone number@carrier email address
e.g. 1234567891@tmomail.net
Where 1234567891 =10 digit mobile phone number and
tmomail.net = carrier email address (T mobile). ( see
carrier email address
list) .
Note: Addresses may change you need to verify them before using.
In order to send to the cell phone you simply create an email (text not HTML)
with your normal email client (keep it under 160 characters and send it to the
phone's email address (as described above).
If you are unsure of the mobile phones carrier network you can check with the
provider (if known) or use the services of
www.teleflip.com (currently free). You simply send a message to:
mobilephonenumber@teleflip.com
and it does the rest.
Sending and Receiving using Carrier Provided Web Portals
Most mobile carriers provide a web portal where you can send a SMS message
to a mobile phone simply by using your browser They generally limit you to
sending to their own network. (common carrier portals)
Generally replies are sent to the email or SMS address you provide when sending
the message . It is also possible with some carriers to access the replies via
the web portal, but you probably will need to register and or/ activate the option. If
in doubt check with mobile provider.
If you want to send messages to other networks then you need a General/Global
web portal.
European Registered Mobile Phones
European registered mobiles do not have an inbuilt email address but they can be
given one by using a email to SMS gateway. Generally you send an email to:
mobile phone number@gateway domain
E.G. 0779805460@gateway.co.uk
Where:
0779805460 is the mobile phone number and
gateway.co.uk is the domain name of the email to SMS gateway.
In order to send to a mobile phone you simply create an email (text not HTML)
with your normal email client (keep it under 160 characters and send it to the
phone's email address (as described above).
The message recipient sees the message as originating from the gateway mobile
phone number and replies like any other SMS message. The gateway will then
forward the reply to your email address or (depending on options) your mobile
phone.
