Switching to Broadband

Many people today are abandoning their old dial up accounts and are switching over to broadband. In doing so they may be changing ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Before you do this you need to consider your email addresses. Most people use email addresses provided by their ISP. Changing ISP usually means that they loose their email addresses.

If you are one of those who regularly switch providers then you should consider separating your email from your ISP. This you can do by using many of the email only providers or by getting yourself  a permanent lifetime email address.

Otherwise you should acquaint yourself with the common procedures to change email addresses.

Special Email Configurations

Your broadband ISP will provide you with details on how to configure your email if you are using mailboxes on the broadband ISP provider. The email setup for outlook express/IncrediMail is no different than for dial-up.

However what happens if you decide to retain your old email mailboxes on the old ISP?

This is in fact what I have done. My broadband provider is BT Yahoo but I continue to use my old mailboxes on onetel.com. To operate this way I only need to make one change to my email set up and that was concerning sending email.

Receiving email was possible without any configuration changes but when sending I got errors. The errors arose because today most ISPs require authentication when sending email ( Spam Prevention) or they require that your machine is using an IP address that they trust.

Once I was connected to BY Yahoo I was using a BT allocated IP address and not a Onetel.com allocated IP address. The email server at Onetel thus rejected my connection.

The solution is simple I just sent my email using the BT SMTP server by changing the SMTP address on the email account. See SMTP overview for more details.

Disable your old Dial Up

Once you are on broadband you also need to disable dial up otherwise when you go to send the email client will try to establish an Internet connection before sending and completely ignore the fact that it is already connected to the Internet.

To do this open Internet explorer select Tools>internet options and make sure the never dial a connection radio box is enabled.
