System and Email Backups
I receive many emails requesting help in recovering lost messages, or restoring
IncrediMail or Outlook Express data. The first question I always ask is
.When was your most recent backup?
The sad fact is that even today most users don't backup either their system or
their email. Here I want to look at both backup types and why it is important to
do both.
System Backups
Windows (all variants) comes with it's own backup program which is capable of
backing up the operating system, settings and data. There are also numerous
third party backup programs which tend to be simpler to use.
Backing up all files on the system including system files is done so that you
can recover from a system failure not from email loss. Unless you are a more
technical user you won't know which files to restore to recover just your email.
Email Backups
You can backup your email by manually backing up files but it is not recommended
except in emergencies.
By far the easiest way of backing up email is to get a
backup program specifically designed to do the job.
The big advantage of backing up email separate from the system is that you can
recover the email without affecting the rest of the system.
