Transfer IncrediMail Address Book/ Contacts
One task that you may need to do is to transfer your IncrediMail address book either between computers or to other email clients like Outlook Express, Firebird, Eudora. To do this you need to
first export your address book in a format that is readable in the other client.
To create a copy of your contacts/addresses so that you can transfer it either to another program or system:
- In the IncrediMail main window, click File>Export and select Contacts.
- The 'Save As' dialog opens. Click Save to save the 'IncrediMail Exported Contacts (csv format)' file to a
suitable location
Restoring/Importing the IncrediMail Address Book
To retrieve your IncrediMail Address Book, either in a new or in an existing IncrediMail installation proceed as follows:
- In the IncrediMail main window, click File>Import and select Contacts.
- The Import Contacts dialog opens. This will allow you not only to import a csv file but also to import directly from several email clients like outlook express, Eudora etc.
Select the 'IncrediMail Exported Contacts (csv format)' and click Next.
- Click Select File and browse to the location of your 'IncrediMail Exported Contacts' CSV file and click
Open.
- Your Address Book will be imported.
Transfer from a None Supported System
Provided the foreign system is capable of generating a csv file then you can import it into IncrediMail but you may need to edit the csv file first.
The csv file consists of two parts
-
Header- There is only one line for the header which contains the field names like Display name. email address etc
-
Data - This is the list of addresses, names etc for the contact there is one line for each contact.
Here is a csv file generated by Incredimail Export :
First name,Middle name,Second name,Display name,E-Mail,Title,Comment,Favorite,Home phone,Home street address,Home city,Home state province,Home
zip code,Home country region,Home fax,Mobile phone,Home web page,Business Phone,Company,Business city address,Business state province,Business street address,Business zip
code,Business country region,Job title,Business fax,Pager,Business web page
zippy,,smith,zippy smith,zipzones1@aol.com,Mr,,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I've highlighted the data portion (there would be many entries here). Notice how the data matched the header here is the matching:
- First name= zippy
- Middle name = blank so get a comma in the data field
- second name= smith
- display name = zippy smith
- E-mail=zipzones1@aol.com
- Tile=Mr
Now the rules are that each data entry is separated by a comma except if the entry is blank in which case a single comma is used to denote a blank entry.
So to import a foreign csv file
- use Incredimail export to export the IncrediMail contacts.
- Edit the exported file so that you have single data entry like the one shown above. This is effectively your template.
- Paste the contents of the foreign csv file underneath . If the foreign csv file has an header delete it.
- Now rearrange the data from the imported csv file so it matches the header. Any unused fields should have commas. This can be time consuming using a spreadsheet program like
Excel makes it much easier.
- It should now import.
