Anonymous Email
Anonymous email is email from someone whose real identity is
unknown- It is not the same as malicious email.
Anonymous email is sent by people, who for very legitimate reasons,
want to hide their identity from the recipient. There are many reasons
for this such as:
- Email to a help organisation like alcoholics anonymous etc
- Complaint email about their boss.
- Tip off to newspapers (Whistleblowing) or police.
-
on-line dating
Sending email anonymously can be done relatively easily by anyone :
- Using a web based email account like Hotmail or Yahoo
- Changing the from and reply to address in the email client.
- Using an anonymous remailer.
-
Use a disposable email address.
- Using a Public location
- A combination of the above.
Web Based Email
The email providers Yahoo and Hotmail require no verifiable
information in order to register and use. They are therefore
completely anonymous.
There are other less known providers (www.stealthmessage.com)
which provide web based email specifically designed for anonymous
use. They usually provide for email encryption and self destructing
emails.
Why not try it?
Disposable email addresses
Disposable email addresses are normally used as a solution to
spam received as a result of requesting information online or
participating in newsgroups. However they can be used to give
anonymity as your real email address is protected.
With a Disposable Email Address Service you can create
Disposable Email Addresses that forwards email to your Real Email Address.
A Disposable email address can be created when needed such as when
requesting information online and are then used in place of your Real Email Address.
If you receive spam from a particular address you can just disable
it.

Remailers
A remailer is a service that accepts messages from a sender and then
removes identifying information from the email before forwarding on.
The remailer may forward the message to several remailers before
delivering the message back into the normal email system for delivery.

Email Tracing
Although it is possible to send email anonymously, it is also almost
always possible to trace the origin of an email. Tracing email can
only be done with the consent and co-operation of various companies
like remailers and ISPs which is normally only forthcoming in the case
of malicious/ criminal email.
Email tracing is done by using the header information available
in all email. If you are interested in decoding email header
information it is described in more detail
here.
Providing your email doesn’t commit an offence then it should remain
anonymous. In any case providing that a public email account is being
used the email will only be traceable to the machine that sent it and
provided that that machine is in a public area it should remain
anonymous.
