Change Email Address FAQs
How do I change my email address, can I keep my old email address, how do I change email provider and keep my email address. These are amongst some of the most common questions I get asked.
So here I will discuss email addresses and the problems that arise when trying to change them.
Getting anew email address is simplicity itself. All you need to do is register with many of the thousands of email providers. The problem arises with the old
email address and the emails that are still being sent to it.
There is a procedure you can adopt that will
- Change of email address notification-Email all of you contacts and notify them of the new email address.
- Arrange for email to your old address to be automatically forwarded to the new
email address for a suitable period (3-6 months) before expiring the old
address.
If your old email provider doesn't provide this facility then
there are a number of companies like email-forwarding.biz or return path that will pick up email
from various accounts and forward them to the new address.
- Monitor your email over the months and see who is still using the old address and notify them again. You may want to consider a message rule that flags the message perhaps by highlighting them
with a different colour.
- Register at an email registry service like findemail and return path. Where you enter the old and
the new addresses and some search details so people can locate you.
- Register yourself at any of the friend reunited related websites (see
below in finding email addresses).
- Get yourself your own personal
email address so that you don't have to worry about this again in a years
time.
The only way of doing this is by maintaining your old account. Depending on your account provider it may be possible to do this at very little cost.
I have retained my old email addresses from an ISP dial up account because they offered a pay as you go type option in which I pay per minute when I use it. I never dial it and so it doesn't cost
anything and I can still access my old email mailboxes.
This is however a temporary situation only and you need to take steps to move to the new email address.
