How to Get and Create Your Own Email Address

In order to be able to create your own email addresses you need first to get a domain name.

 A domain name is the basis of your email addresses, and is not as expensive as many think, often costing less than $10 per year.

Your own Domain Name

 Once you have your own domain name it belongs to you and you control it.

With your own domain name you can create your own email addresses, and best of all, provided you continue to pay the annual registration fee, you can  keep it as long as you want.

A domain name is in effect an address. It can be the address of a Website, and it can also the address of a mailbox.

 The email address has the general form mailbox@name2.name1

Even though you can use the domain name to host a website as well as for email, the criteria for selecting the domain name tends to be different depending on the intended primary use of the name.

In this case we are looking at the primary use being email, with an address of this form.

john@johndoe.com

Where johndoe.com is the registered domain name and john is the mailbox name. Because you own the domain name you can create as many email addresses as you desire and name them accordingly.

One of the very popular uses of the type of email address is on personal websites or website named after the owner - where the email address is commonly:

ask@johndoe.com

Although the use of a .com address is very common the Internet authorities have  pre-assigned a domain name for use by individuals for personal use --It is the .name TLD.

Using this type of address our email would then be:

ask@johndoe.name

Create Email Addresses

Once you have chosen and registered your own domain name then it is a relatively easy ask to create email addresses. Having your own domain name means that you can create unlimited email addresses.

If your domain name is johndoe.name then your email addresses will have the form someone@johndoe.name. where someone is the mailbox name e.g. john.

The mailbox name, or what is often called the local part, usually consists of alphanumeric characters (a-z,0-9). Many so called special characters are allowed but some can cause problems. The most common one is the . (dot). Email addresses of the form:

 firstname.lastname@johndoe.name

are very common. I would stick with only:

•  a-Z,0-9
•  . (dot)
•  +(plus)
• _ (underscore)
• - (hyphen)

Even though a space is allowed it causes problems and should be avoided. Here you will find a  list of valid email address characters along with explanations.

Remember the address is not the mailbox you will still need to associate a mailbox with the address you create or use email forwarding.
