Email Address Verification
You may receive an email from someone you don't recognise
and want to quickly verify the email address or you have a mailing list and want
to keep it up to date and need therefore to verify multiple email addresses.
Email Address Verification is the process of establishing the
validity of an address. There are many online resources that can be used for
single addresses but for validating mailing lists you require PC based
software.
Online verification
Online verification sites are:
www.addresses.com/email_verify.php
www.verifyemail.com
The catch all option when enabled
gives misleading results as it will only verify that the domain name is valid and not the
email address.
Offline verification
Offline verification tools are available from many sources that
specialize in bulk email. Because the number one use of email verification is in
the bulk email/newsletter business most of the suppliers of email address
verification software also provide bulk emailing software.
How Email Verification Works
Email verification works by following the exact same process
as are followed when sending an email to the recipient except that no email is
sent . The process is as follows:
-
The sender’s SMTP mail server determines the
addressee’s mail server using a DNS Lookup (MX records).
-
The sender’s SMTP mail server
connects to the recipients mail server via the SMTP protocol and pretends to transmit
a
message.
Usually about 30% of unavailable addresses which can be determined
are discovered on the first checking stage (DNS request). To discover the other
70% the 2nd stage is necessary (SMTP connection emulation).
The 2nd stage usually takes more time and the complete
two-stage email address verification check takes the same time as sending a
short message.
