Last months issue was about spam and email and PC security. Microsoft have just released a new PC protection service called Onecare. It
includes:
- anti-virus
- anti-spyware
- firewall protection
- automatic software updates
- automated backup scheduling
- automated hard disk maintenance and file cleanup.
It is a subscription based service and only works with Windows XP. You can try it free for 90 days.
Google Gmail
I've just managed to get a Gmail account and have been busy getting it to work with Outlook Express and IncrediMail. It did however coincide with the week that
Google experienced email problems.
Despite that I was very happy with the Gmail interface and very pleased that Google allow access using a standard POP3 client like Outlook Express.
As for the ads they are only present when you read your email using the web browser Interface and not when using a standard POP3 client.
If you have a Gmail Account and want to set it up for POP3 access take a look at configuring Gmail for pop3 access which which also shows you how
to setup Outlook Express (OE) and IncrediMail.
Email Security- Encryption and Signatures
Although it is relatively easy to do not many people or organizations actually use email encryption or digital signatures. The main reason is that encrypted emails cannot normally
be virus or spam checked and so you have to do without either.
However for very confidential and secure communication then you may want to consider it. To help take a look at Email Encryption and
Digital Signatures which takes you through the process, technology and terminology in, I hope, an easy to understand fashion.
Don't confuse these type of signatures with signature files which are basically lines of standard text or images added to bottom of each
message.
