Microsoft have also released IE7.0. It is available for download here. There is no update for Outlook Express in this
download as the browser and email have no been separated.
The next release of Outlook Express is now called windows live mail desktop and is
still in beta.
It's fast approaching Christmas and the long holidays. It is at this time of year that I get questions regarding automated email replies. For more information take a look at the
out of office replies article.
Organising Your Email for Outlook Express Users
Just a quick reminder Of what we have covered in previous issues:
- Issue 14- Creating Identities to organise email at the user level
-
Issue 15-Using Folders to arrange email in the mailbox
-
Issue 16- Using folder views to Organise the folder
In this months issue we will look at finding emails. Outlook express has a very powerful find facility that allows you to locate emails. Just click find on the toolbar.

Enter in the search criteria and click the find now button.

The search results appear and you can now select the messages using the CRTL and/or shift keys and move them, copy them, delete them or even forward them.

I use this often for finding a bunch of related messages and moving them into their own folders.
Sending Photos using Email
Today most of us have digital cameras and want to share our pictures with friends and family. The easiest way is to send them using email. The problem with doing this is that photos can be large
and simply attaching them to emails may cause them to become too large and the message just gets rejected.
It is a good idea to keep all messages under 5MB to ensure that they pass over the net. Remember even though our ISP may allow for larger messages others on route may not.
So if you are going to send them as email attachments then you should:
- Compress them with a utility like WinZip
- Ensure that the message size remains under 5MB. You may need to send several messages to accomplish this
However if you have a Yahoo account then you can use PhotoMail. This is
new yahoo mail feature that allows easy sharing of photos on the Internet.
You can insert Pictures directly into an email the recipient sees a small thumbnail image( not the real image) and clicking on the thumbnail downloads the real image.
The image is not actually sent via the mail system ( only a link to the image) which means that it would not be blocked due to size.
Below is a screen shot of what the recipient sees. The two images have clickable links which when clicked open the image in a web browser on the Yahoo site. You can then save the image to your PC
or to Yahoo Photos.
You should also see an attachment (called DSC..). This is the standard way of sending pictures using email but notice the size (over 1Mbytes).

If you have large files that you want to send then take a look at the sending large attachments using email article.

Remember
You should ensure that the details are kept confidential as they are very important (see - If I knew your email account details.
It is also a very good idea to change your account password on a regular basis (every 60 days is sufficient). If you do this you either have to keep a note of the change each time or develop a system for your
passwords. It is also important that you do not use the same password anywhere else.
