Greetings, Announcements and News

Welcome to the May issue of The easy Email Ezine.

Quick OE News

I am seeing quite a lot of newsgroups reporting problems with IE 7.0 and Outlook Express and so I  personally won't be installing IE 7.0 until I have done more research.

If you're not thinking of moving to Windows Vista then you will be please to know that Microsoft have extended support of Windows XP to 2014.

If you are using Outlook Express Identities with XP SP2 then you will have to log on each time you open outlook Express. This is a feature change.

You cannot configure Windows Mail to use a Web-based e-mail account in Windows Vista so if you use an hotmail account you cannot access it via Windows mail. Microsoft KB 926374

Quick IncrediMail News

IncrediMail doesn't yet support the new Windows Vista so if you upgrade to Vista you will have to wait before you can install IncrediMail.

There seems to be a May update but the download page is showing a March version. I don't know what you will get if you try and download it so I would leave any upgrades until the download page is corrected.

Reminders!

Important Note: Since build 2068 August 2005 the junk email feature has become subscription based. If you are currently running a version earlier than this, and are using the junk email features, and aren't prepared to subscribe then don't upgrade!!

If you are buying a new computer don't forget that you may still need access to your old emails. You may want to take a look at Windows easy transfer.

Email Maintenance

How many of you do regular backups? Despite many people knowing about backups, not many actually do them.

Therefore if you're not already doing them, and your email is important to you, then please make regular backups. The less technical you are then the more reason to think of investing ii backup software as it makes the job much easier.

Many people think that backing up the entire operating system solves the problem ( see system and email backups). It does, but do you want to restore the entire operating system to get back a few emails? Yes you can restore the Outlook express mailbox stores separately, but again you must really understand what you are doing.

Use of the From Field

If you create a new email in Outlook Express you may see 4 address fields like in the screen shot below.

The BCC field may not be visible but can be enabled see Using Bcc In email, but how about the form field.

Well that is only  present if your email client is configured to use multiple email accounts (See Managing Multiple Email Accounts/Mailboxes for more details). In which case when you send a new email you can choose which email account sent it, so that the correct address is placed in the email.

If you don't physically choose one, then the default email address/account is used. This can be confusing to the recipient, and can even result in your email not being delivered as the default address my be rejected by the recipient.

Therefore if you have more than one email account configured on your client pay special attention to the from address field.

Out of Office Replies?

Its holiday time again and I've received  many emails on how to send "out of office replies  "

Remember

You should ensure that the details are kept confidential as they are very important (see - If I knew your email account details.

It is also a very good idea to change your account password on a regular basis (every 60 days is sufficient). If you do this you either have to keep a note of the change each time or develop a system for your passwords. It is also important that you do not use the same password anywhere else.
