Welcome to the February issue of The easy Email Ezine. This Ezine is dedicated to supplying useful information, news and tips on Outlook Express, Incredimail and email in general .

Our February theme is  email Mailing Lists. Email lists are used for many reasons like newsletters, sales letters, update notifications. In this months issue we will look in more detail how to set up an maintain an email mailing list.

Reminder! Important Note: Since build 2068 August 2005 the junk email feature has become subscription based. If you are currently running a version earlier than this, and are using the junk email features, and aren't prepared to subscribe then don't upgrade!!

Reminder! Goodbye Outlook Express and Hello Windows Mail- The next outlook express update will most likely be in the new operating system Windows Vista due out in late 2006.

Reminder! If you are a yahoo email user or want a Yahoo account free or otherwise yahoo are now allowing the use of first.lastname@yahoo.com or .co.uk for Uk registered users.

Quickly sort message by date, sender etc

If you look at the column headers in the message window you will see something like the screenshot below:

To change the columns displayed in the message list

  1. On the View menu, click Columns.
  2. To add/remove a column, click or clear the check box next to the column name, or select the column name and click show or Hide.
  3. To change the order in which columns appear, select a column name, and then click Move Up or Move Down.

Spam and Virus News

Reminder! Microsoft have recently released an add-in for the MSN toolbar the Microsoft® Phishing Filter Add-in for MSN® Search Toolbar  works with MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search and Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or later.

Spam is still a problem even though Bill thought it would be gone by now...Bill Gates' Spam Prediction Misses Target and November was a record month for phishing attacks with Ebay and PayPal topping the 2005 list.

There is also a rapid growth of keyloggers combined with phishing software designed for identity theft.
 

Top Virus Threats-

Grisoft the makers of AVG anti-virus software (free version available for non business use) report the following as the top  virus threats (February 2006) :

  • Worm/Generic.FX This worm spreads by internet and contains one dangerous payload action - every 3rd day of month worm overwrites files with doc, xls, mdb, mde, ppt, pps, zip, rar, pdf, psd and dmp extensions.
  • Exploit.WMF -These files exploits WMF vulnerability in Windows Operating Systems that allows malware code execution while WMF format file is opening.
  • I-Worm/Bagle.JH -It spreads thanks to massive SPAMing, messages contains attachements with zip extension and exe file inside with 9968 B size
  • I-Worm/Sober.CF-This virus comes in as an attachment to emails written in English or German language
  • I-Worm/Sober.S, .T- This virus comes in as an attachment to emails written in English or German language.
  • I-Worm/Mytob.LY, LZ (aka Zotob.A - B)
    This worm spreads exploiting security hole described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-039.
  • Win32/Gaelicum

Grisoft latest update January 26 2006 -Added detection of new variant of I-Worm/Mytob, new variant of trojan PSW.Banker.
