How to Move the Default Store Location in Outlook Express
Outlook Express stores email messages in database files that have a .dbx file extension. All of the databases are located in a root store or folder, the default location varies
depending on the Operating system and is:
Windows 98
C:\Windows\Application Data\Outlook Express\(GUID)
or
Windows XP, 2000
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\(GUID)\Microsoft\Outlook Express ---------
The GUID (global Unique Identifier) is a 128 bit number that identifies the user to the system. We don’t have to worry too much about this only to appreciate what it is.
Because of the store location it is not so simple to back up as it is located among program files. I would recommend that you move the store to another partition ,if possible, but
certainly to another directory; preferably with data that gets backed up regularly.
Before changing the store location I recommend that you first do a quick backup see
Outlook Express quick and easy backup.
To change the location of your store:
- Decide on a new location and create the folder.
- Open Outlook Express
- Click Tools> Options.
- Click the Maintenance tab.
- Click Store folder and the location appears.
- Click on change.
- Browse to the new directory.
- Click ok.
- You will get a confirmation messages telling you that the location will be changed after you close an open Outlook Express. Click ok.
- Close all windows and then close Outlook Express.
- Open Outlook Express
NOTE: If you have multiple Identities configured you will need to repeat for the other Identities.
