Troubleshooting Outlook Express Error Messages

Outlook Express error messages can appear confusing at first, so what do you do when you get one. In this article we are going to look at how to deal with error messages in general and also at some of the most common errors resulting from incorrect configuration.

Microsoft Outlook express error messages vary in detail from simple pop ups like "access denied" to very detailed error messages with associated message numbers like this one below:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'mail.onetel.net.uk', Server: 'mail.onetel.net.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Message Server said: Invalid login', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

The more detailed the error message the easier the problem is to troubleshoot. The procedure for troubleshooting these error messages is however the same.

The main source of information regarding Outlook Express is the Outlook Express support site. Microsoft maintains an extensive database (knowledge base) of Outlook Express errors and issues. For details on using the Microsoft Outlook Express support site please see this article- Troubleshooting Outlook Express.

Although the Microsoft Outlook Express support site is the ultimate source of information on Outlook Express error messages it is not the only one! If you are using third party (i.e. non-Microsoft) backup software or have installed any add on products; especially Outlook Express and Internet explorer add-ons, you should also visit the vendors site and consult the FAQs.

Also don't forget your ISP. Many ISPs customise Internet explorer and so don't forget to consult their FAQs.
